Checking students' work for plagiarism requires time and resources. URKUND offers a fully-automated system for handling plagiarism that is easy to use and introduce into a university or college as it can be used via Moodle, Blackboard, D2L, Canvas (among other VLEs) or by email.
Students send their documents to their teachers. Along the electronic route between student and teacher, the documents are checked against three central source areas: Internet, published material and student material. If any document displays similarities with the content in the three sources, the system will flag it for possible plagiarism. A simplified analysis overview is generated and sent by email to the teacher concerned who can then determine if plagiarism has occurred.
Easy to use
URKUND does not require any software installation, no use of complex interfaces and no login to any website for the student nor the teacher. This means that the service is very easy to use and introduce into an organisation.
Integrated system
It is important to differentiate between URKUND's email based system and other tools, that require the teacher to log in to a website and upload the students' documents for checking.
The most important differences are listed below:
URKUND's email based system automatically checks all submitted documents with no extra effort required on the part of the teacher. In other systems that require teachers to select and upload documents, the extra workload on the part of many different teachers, means that there is a chance not all documents will be checked.
URKUND's system does not require teachers to select documents; all documents are checked at the point of submission. This maximises the discovery frequency and at the same time it avoids arbitrary and random selection of documents for checking. Other tools that require a teacher to select and upload documents only those that they consider to be plagiarised are checked, as well as any documents chosen for random screening.
URKUND screens all submitted documents at every instance of submission. This maximises the discovery rate. All systems requiring the screening of only a selection of the submitted documents have a lower rate of discovery.

Students upload their material according to the university’s instructions. This tends to be via the VLE (URKUND is integrated into Moodle, Canvas, D2L, Blackboard) but can also be via email or upload to the teacher's account. As URKUND is purchased via a licence, clients can use all three methods.
