We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

There are several customisation options for your browser and device that could help you use this website and other websites more effectively.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Chest (an Enterprise of Jisc) is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons:

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Content

Some text and background combinations don’t have enough contrast. These don’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum). We are working on correcting these.

Headings on some pages are not in a logical nested order. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (info and relationships). We are addressing this as pages are identified.

Some tables do not have row headers. This doesn’t mee WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and relationships). We are working on correcting these.

Some of the links are not labelled clearly. This means that they do not make sense when taken out of context, and for some links it is not possible to know what the purpose of the link is. On some pages there are repeat links to the same resource. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 (link purpose). We will correct links over time as we review each page.

Focused links and buttons sometimes do not have enough contrast. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.11 (Non-text Contrast). We are working on correcting this.

Some images are missing or have unhelpful alt text. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content). We are working to correct these.

Buttons on some pages do not have appropriate alternate text to indicate the function of the button. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criteria 1.1.1 Non-text Content or 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context). We plan to identify and fix this during 2020.

Forms

Error messages on some forms are unclear or lack clear association with particular form controls. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 3.3.1 (Error identification)

Our footnotes aren’t fully accessible using a keyboard. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.2.2 (keyboard).

Issues with PDFs and other documents

Some PDFs and Word documents published on the site don’t meet accessibility standards – for example they may not be marked-up, so they are inaccessible to a screen reader. They don’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (name, role value). Where they are essential to providing our services we aim to provide accessible HTML pages as an alternative.

Navigation and accessing information

Issues with interactive tools and transactions

Some of our interactive forms may be difficult to navigate using a keyboard. For example, some form controls are missing a ‘label’ tag. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.1 (Keyboard Accessible). We are working on correcting these issues.

There is inadequate context with some interfaces – especially around listing pages and pagination controls. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content). We are working on correcting these issues.

Some interactive elements don’t have the required descriptive tags and labels. This means that some, such as carousels, don’t inform screen reader users of their current state. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criteria 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value) and 4.1.3 (Status messages). We are working on correcting these issues.

It is not always apparent which page element has the current keyboard focus so that the user knows where they are. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.7 (FOcus Visible). We are working on correcting these issues.

Issues with video and audio
Some videos and audio on our website, often provided to us by 3rd parties, do not have to have the caption or transcriptions available. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.2.1 (audio only and video only – prerecorded). The regulations don’t require us to publish fully accessible video and audio content produced before September 2020. (The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 – Regulation 4). We will endeavour to add caption controls and transcriptions on new content where it is within our control.

Third party content

Our website contains some third-party content. We do not have control over and are not responsible for the accessibility of this content. We make best endeavours to work with third parties to improve its accessibility. This may include:

  • Links to Chest Suppliers’ websites
  • Content hosted on other websites
  • Content/functionality on our website

Third party tools

Slide Share
We occasionally use Slide Share on the site. We know there are some accessibility issues with these embedded players. You can click through to the Slide Share site where you can download a PDF of the presentation - but there are also accessibility issues with these auto-generated PDFs. We don't have a suitable alternative and, as we don't control the platform, are unable to make the changes required to improve it. Please let us know if you would like an accessible version of any of our presentations and we will send one through to you.

YouTube and Google Maps
We occasionally embed YouTube videos and Google Maps on the site. We know there are accessibility issues with these features. We don't have accessible alternatives and, as we don't control the platform, are unable to make the changes required to improve them. Let us know if you would like an accessible version of any video we put live, or need accessible directions or location details and we will send them through to you.

Content that’s not within scope of the accessibility regulations

Older PDFs and other documents
The accessibility regulations don’t require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they are not essential to providing our services.

How we tested this website

An in-depth accessibility audit was completed in August 2020 by Wattle Solutions Ltd. It will be tested regularly by the same company. We are currently working through their recommendations.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

Whenever new features are released, they must meet WCAG 2.1 AA. We’re also committed to working on the issues above.
