The Chest Order, together with the Licence Terms and Conditions, and any exceptions listed below, create a legally binding contract between your institution, organisation or company and the Licensor. Therefore please read the terms and conditions carefully and only submit a Chest Order if its terms and conditions are acceptable to your institution, organisation or company and you have the authority to make the financial commitment shown.
This Site licence is subject to the terms and conditions for the Standard Chest Licence for Online Resources with the exceptions listed below.
Perpetual (outright) purchase
The purchase price covers the content up to 31 December in the year of acquisition. The Annual Update Fee covers the outright purchase of all materials published in subsequent years.
On receipt of a completed Order Institutions will be invoiced for the Agreement year in which the Licence is signed.
There is no pro-rata charging for outright purchases or installments for Institutions which become licensed partway through a licence year.
Annual Update fee
Fees are charged from year 2 onwards.
Example: if a library takes an outright purchase in 2022, the first update fee will be charged in 2023.
Annual subscription
The annual Subscription Fee covers a subscription from 1 January 2022 until 31 December 2024, and includes access to all materials published until 31 December 2024.
Thereafter, unless a further Licence is obtained from the Supplier commencing 1 January 2025, then access to the Product will cease on 31 December 2024.
On receipt of a completed Order Institutions will be invoiced for the Agreement year in which the Licence is signed. Institutions will be invoiced three months in advance of the anniversary date of the Agreement, on 1 October.
There is monthly pro-rata charging for subscriptions fees for Institutions which become licensed partway through a licence year.
All Purchase orders must be made out to JISC, 4 Portwall Lane, Bristol, BS1 6NB.
All terms contained in a PO are expressly rejected and do not form part of the Licence or vary the Licence terms in any way.

Payments are due within thirty days of invoice date; recipients of late payments are entitled to interest in accordance with UK statutory provisions.

Authorized Users may:
Search, view, retrieve and display the Licensed Materials.
Print a copy or download and save Documents for personal use.
Use Documents within Learning Objects for the Licensee’s teaching, learning or training purposes
Use Text and Data Mining technologies to derive information from the Licensed Materials. Authorized Users may use the results of any Text Mining activity for their research, including without limitation the creation of an index, abstract, or description of Licensed Materials, whether in the form of a direct extraction or a representation in any form which is based on subscribed Content. If published, the research must be original and must not amount to a derivative work.
Distribute a copy of Documents in print or electronic form to other Authorized Users or to other individual scholars collaborating with Authorized Users but only for the purposes of research and private study; for the avoidance of doubt, this sub-clause shall include the distribution of a copy for teaching purposes to each individual student Authorized User in a class at the Licensee's institution.
Download a copy of Documents and share the same with Authorized Users or other individual scholars collaborating in a specific research project with such Authorized Users provided that it is held and accessed within a closed network that is not accessible to any person not directly involved in such collaboration and provided that it is deleted from such network immediately upon completion of the collaboration.
Staff of the Licensee who publish with the Publisher have self-archiving rights with regard to their work as set out on the website www.brill.com.
Material downloaded under the Agreement before its expiry may continue to be used under the same licence conditions as pertain while the Agreement exists. Once the Agreement has terminated then no further access to the service and to future publications will be possible unless the Agreement is renewed or extended. If the Agreement is renewed or extended then new conditions will apply. If the Agreement is not renewed then renewal is a matter between Institutions and Brill.
The Fee for early termination in accordance with clause 10.4 of the Terms and Conditions for the Standard Chest Licence for Online Resources is nil. Please note that this clause has been amended. The notice period under this agreement is ninety days, not sixty.
The Fee for retention rights upon termination in accordance with clause 10.5 of the Terms and Conditions for the Standard Chest Licence for Online Resources is nil.
Clause 2.2(m) of the Terms and Conditions for the Standard Chest Licence for Online Resources is amended to restrict Interlibrary loan to the UK and by post only, by the insertion of the words “in the UK” between the phrases “another library” and “by post”.
